Sartaj's tips for Dal Lake

What a local would tell you before you book a bed in Dal Lake — the things the booking sites leave out.

Choose your ghat carefully

The water directly opposite Boulevard Road is the busiest and noisiest in Srinagar. Ghats 9 to 16 are calmer, and you are still only a short shikara ride from the Boulevard.

Check what the tariff actually covers

The arrival and departure shikara transfer should be included. Several boats bill it separately at checkout, so get it confirmed in writing.

Winter means checking the bukhari

From December to February confirm the wood stove and the backup electric heater both work. A beautiful boat with no heat is a very long night.
