Gulmarg is Kashmir's snow and ski destination, roughly 50 to 65 km west of Srinagar at about 2,650 m. Its gondola climbs towards Apharwat in two phases, and December to February is the only reliable snow window. From April the meadows turn green and the same slopes become walking country.

How To Reach
There is no airport, station or through-bus at Gulmarg — every route ends with a drive from Srinagar. Fly into Srinagar, then take a taxi up through Tangmarg; it is the shortest transfer of the four destinations.

50 km to GulmargTaxis from the airport reach Gulmarg in around two hours without going into Srinagar city. In deep winter the last stretch above Tangmarg can need chains, and the road is sometimes closed for clearing after heavy snowfall.

The things worth knowing before you go — the sort that only come from having been there in every season.
Book the gondola online before you travel. Phase 1 and Phase 2 are separate tickets, and Phase 2 is the one that sells out — it also shuts on its own for weather and maintenance.
Snow boots and gaiters rent for a fraction of what the roadside stalls first quote, and you only need them if you are actually walking in snow. Settle the price before anything goes on your feet.
In heavy snow the road above Tangmarg can close at short notice. Start early — vehicles that leave Srinagar after mid-morning are the ones that get turned back.

Gulmarg On The Map
Gulmarg is a bowl-shaped meadow ringed by pine forest, high above the valley floor. The gondola base station, the golf course and most hotels sit around the same open meadow, so the resort itself is walkable — everything else is a drive down through Tangmarg.

Gulmarg travel questions
December to February is the reliable window, with January and February usually the deepest. March is unpredictable as the snow softens. From April the meadows are green and any snow you see underfoot will be at the top of the gondola's second phase, not in Gulmarg itself.
Yes, particularly for Phase 2. Phase 1 and Phase 2 are separate tickets and Phase 2 sells out first. Book online before you travel. Both phases also close at short notice for weather and maintenance, so keep the day flexible rather than planning everything around it.
Yes — it is the shortest transfer of the four at roughly 50 to 65 km and 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Leave early, because in winter the road above Tangmarg can close for snow clearing and vehicles arriving late are the ones turned back. Staying overnight is worth it in ski season.
Yes. There are gentler slopes near the base with instructors and rental gear available locally, alongside the advanced terrain higher up that Gulmarg is better known for. Arrange instruction through your stay or through us rather than on the slope, so the rate and the instructor are confirmed in advance.
Often, yes. In heavy snow the stretch above Tangmarg needs chains or a snow-capable vehicle, and ordinary Srinagar taxis will stop there and hand you over to a local jeep. Budget for that leg separately in December to February.
